Mass Effect Gets a New Writer

Mass Effect Movie New Writer Foehls

It?s been a long time since the Mass Effect adaptation from Legendary was brought up in conversation, and a recent report may indicate why.?It seems the original script treatment penned by Mark Protosevich is being tossed aside, and relatively unproven scribe Morgan Davis Foehl is being brought in as the new writer.

He may seem an unlikely choice to successfully bring the videogame trilogy to the big screen, but his previous credits are a potential sign to fans that the film is moving in the right direction.

As Variety reports, Legendary is now bringing in Morgan Davis Foehl, an assistant editor-turned-writer who has yet to see one of his scripts make it to the screen. Foehl has experience as an assistant editor on FX?s Rescue Me and the Adam Sandler comedies I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry and Click. Foehl isn?t completely new to the writing game, having written a script for Alien Sleeper Cell from District 9 producer Bill Block.

While Foehl?s writing credits are slim, the reception to his work has been promising. Since Alien Sleeper Cell is being developed largely independently, it?s Foehl?s script (based on a pitch by Felipe Linz) that?s being used to sell the film to studios. Little is known about the project, besides the fact that it blends alien invasions with the tension of Matt Damon?s Bourne series. Foehl has also penned the script Whatever Gets You Through The Night, a thriller built around the son of a mob lawyer that earned a spot on 2009?s Black List of unproduced screenplays.

Mass Effect 3 Live Action Trailer

Add in his one-shot from Image Comics,?City of Refuge, and current job adapting Top Cow?s comic Crosshair?(following a suburban father who?s been programmed by the CIA to assassinate the President) and Morgan Davis Foehl seems to have a handle on the interstellar action and thrilling espionage that a Mass Effect movie would likely require. Fans of the game will be happy to hear that it was Foehl?s knowledge of the Mass Effect?series along with his previous credits that earned him the job from Legendary, but we wouldn?t expect this to mark a sudden increase in updates or details on the film?s status.

The creative minds behind the science fiction trilogy always maintained that a Mass Effect film wouldn?t be fast-tracked solely for profitability?s sake, even if that meant stalling production until the right talent and script was in place. Even Legendary Pictures claimed to be interested in bringing the property to the big screen?for its emphasis on strong characters and compelling story more than brand recognition.

Exactly what the story would focus on has proven to be a contentious issue, with scriptwriter Mark Protosevich (Jurassic Park IV, I am Legend ) and the studio seeming to be in disagreement over the plot. Protosevich claimed the script would honor the plot of the games and not feature a completely new story. What Foehl?s hiring means for the fate of Protosevich?s treatment is unclear, but it will be a pleasant change for fans to hear some positivity around the Mass Effect name.

The finale to Commander Shepard?s inter-galactic war against a race of machines, Mass Effect 3, released in March to conflicted reception. While hailed as one of the most polished and refined games of the year by critics, it was the writers? perceived fumbling of the story?s conclusion that sparked online petitions and cupcake-drives (easily the most delicious form of protest we can think of). The developers even modified and expanded the ending in response to the criticism, so we can understand why Legendary is taking their time -?Mass Effect fans are nothing if not devoted.

Mass Effect Movie Script Change

Don?t look so sad, Shepard, your movie?s still in the works.

Morgan Davis Foehl?s involvement could mean a completely new approach to the adaptation, but we won?t know for sure until either he or Legendary make an announcement. We?ll keep you updated when they do.

What do you think of Legendary?s decision to go with a less proven writer over Protosevich?s larger resume of films still in production? Think the Mass Effect movie should involve as much spy thriller as alien action? Sound off in the comments.

Clinton: Facebook post about Benghazi attack not hard 'evidence'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday a Facebook post in which an Islamic militant group claimed credit for a recent attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya did not constitute hard evidence of who was responsible.

"Posting something on Facebook is not in and of itself evidence. I think it just underscores how fluid the reporting was at the time and continued for some time to be," Clinton said during an appearance with the Brazilian foreign minister at the State Department.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that an official email showed officials at the White House and State Department were advised two hours after attackers assaulted the U.S. diplomatic mission on September 11 that an Islamic militant group had claimed credit.

The email, obtained by Reuters from government sources not connected with U.S. spy agencies or the State Department and who requested anonymity, specifically mentioned that the Libyan group called Ansar al-Sharia had asserted responsibility for the attacks.

That and two other emails also made available showed how U.S. diplomats described the attack, even as it was still under way, to Washington.

Clinton, responding to a reporter's question about the emails, noted that a State Department investigation was under way.

"The independent accountability review board is already hard at work looking at everything, not cherry picking one story here or one document there, but looking at everything - which I highly recommend as the appropriate approach for something as complex as an attack like this," she said.

"We will find out what happened. We will take whatever measures are necessary to fix anything that needs to be fixed and we will bring those to justice who committed these murders."

White House spokesman Jay Carney, asked about the emails, noted that Ansar al-Sharia had later denied responsibility for the attack.

"This was an open-source, unclassified email about a posting on a Facebook site. I would also note I think that within a few hours, that organization itself claimed that it had not been responsible. Neither should be taken as fact -- that's why there's an investigation under way," he told reporters traveling with President Barack Obama aboard Air Force One to Iowa.

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the Benghazi assault, which Obama and other U.S. officials ultimately acknowledged was a "terrorist" attack carried out by militants with suspected links to al Qaeda affiliates or sympathizers.

Administration spokesmen, including Carney, citing an unclassified assessment prepared by the CIA, maintained for days that the attacks likely were a spontaneous protest against an anti-Muslim film.

While officials did mention the possible involvement of "extremists," they did not lay blame on any specific militant groups or possible links to al Qaeda or its affiliates until intelligence officials publicly alleged that on September 28.

There were indications that extremists with possible al Qaeda connections were involved, but also evidence that the attacks could have erupted spontaneously, they said, adding that government experts were cautious about pointing fingers prematurely.

U.S. intelligence officials have emphasized since shortly after the attack that early intelligence reporting about the attack was mixed.

MISSIVES FROM LIBYA

The records obtained by Reuters consist of three emails dispatched by the State Department's Operations Center to multiple government offices, including addresses at the White House, Pentagon, intelligence community and FBI, on the afternoon of September 11.

The first email, timed at 4:05 p.m. Washington time - or 10:05 p.m. Benghazi time, 20-30 minutes after the attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission allegedly began - carried the subject line "U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi Under Attack" and the notation "SBU", meaning "Sensitive But Unclassified."

The text said the State Department's regional security office had reported that the diplomatic mission in Benghazi was under attack. "Embassy in Tripoli reports approximately 20 armed people fired shots; explosions have been heard as well," it said.

The message continued: "Ambassador Stevens, who is currently in Benghazi, and four ... personnel are in the compound safe haven. The 17th of February militia is providing security support."

A second email, headed "Update 1: U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi" and timed 4:54 p.m. Washington time, said that the Embassy in Tripoli had reported that "the firing at the U.S. Diplomatic Mission in Benghazi had stopped and the compound had been cleared." It said a "response team" was at the site attempting to locate missing personnel.

A third email, also marked SBU and sent at 6:07 p.m. Washington time, carried the subject line: "Update 2: Ansar al-Sharia Claims Responsibility for Benghazi Attack."

The message reported: "Embassy Tripoli reports the group claimed responsibility on Facebook and Twitter and has called for an attack on Embassy Tripoli."

While some information identifying recipients of this message was redacted from copies of the messages obtained by Reuters, a government source said that one of the addresses to which the message was sent was the White House Situation Room, the president's secure command post.

Other addressees included intelligence and military units as well as one used by the FBI command center, the source said.

It was not known what other messages were received by agencies in Washington from Libya that day about who might have been behind the attacks.

Intelligence experts caution that initial reports from the scene of any attack or disaster are often inaccurate.

By the morning of September 12, the day after the Benghazi attack, Reuters reported that there were indications that members of both Ansar al-Sharia, a militia based in the Benghazi area, and al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the North African affiliate of al Qaeda's faltering central command, may have been involved in organizing the attacks.

One U.S. intelligence official said that during the first classified briefing about Benghazi given to members of Congress, officials "carefully laid out the full range of sparsely available information, relying on the best analysis available at the time."

The official added, however, that the initial analysis of the attack that was presented to legislators was mixed.

"Briefers said extremists were involved in attacks that appeared spontaneous, there may have been a variety of motivating factors, and possible links to groups such as (al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and Ansar al-Sharia) were being looked at closely," the official said.

How Your Family Should Feel About You Dating Again | Luv and ...

So you?ve decided you want to look for a new relationship.? Singles dating is a new adventure for you, especially after you haven?t been out there for a long time.? This new step in your life will be an exciting, albeit scary, adventure.? However, you?re willing to take that step to see where it leads you.? Your ultimate goal? Why ultimate happiness with someone you love and who loves you too of course!! Only one predicament, how will your family react to this news?

For some of you, the reaction will be one of happiness.? They want you to be happy and enjoy every moment of your life with someone who makes fills your life with joy.? They might even help you meet someone new!! Others might not be so eager to see you find someone new, especially if you are replacing one of their dear loved ones.? They are still attached to the idea of you and your previous partner and cannot let that image go.? Both situations can equally have positive and negative side effects to mature dating.

In the first scenario, you have a family that is supportive and happy for you.? It is positive for you because you don?t have to worry about their reaction to you moving on.? Additionally, it just makes your life easier.? They are stepping back while you live your life on your own terms.? On the other hand, they might get over enthusiastic about the whole idea of you singles dating and will take it overboard.? They will set up online dating accounts for you, introduce you to people they know, try to give you advice and always ask you about your singles dating life.? In this case, unless this is what you want, you just need to thank them for their enthusiasm and assistance, and then say that the mature dating process is an adventure you want to take on your own and will make sure to introduce them to any positive prospects.

In the second scenario, you have a family that is none too happy that you are mature dating.? They think that singles dating is not something that you should be even contemplating, let alone carrying out.? Perhaps they feel that you are betraying the memory of your previous partner, or they could be afraid this new person will take you away from them.? Either way, they are making things quite difficult for you.? In this case, you want to sit down with them and ask them what their main concerns are and why they feel that way.? You will also want to explain why you want to engage in mature dating, whether it be for companionship or even an activity partner, they need to know your reasons.? Try your best to make them feel like this won?t change how you felt about your past and that they will always be an important part of your present and future.

Mature dating is a unique way to connect with others who are facing similar life challenges and joys as you.? Someone who has gone through what you have and is singles dating just like you can not only make your life a better place, but they can also bring you and your family a new understanding and life experiences.? Whether your family is supportive or not, you should achieve what makes you happy and always do what will fulfil your life.

Why we need a financial transaction tax | GreenBiz.com

The financial crisis, from which the global economy is still rebounding, demonstrated a variety of systemic risks associated with the practices of financial institutions.

While most regulatory reform efforts have focused on the mortgage industry and lending practices, there are other significant threats to the financial system that remain unregulated and threaten the stability of global markets.

Of particular concern is the investment industry?s reliance on computer-driven, high-frequency trading on global stock exchanges. As an Accredited Investment Fiduciary?, my role is to identify investments that have perceived long-term value. But the majority of trades on the exchanges today are conducted by high-frequency traders using enormous computers and sophisticated algorithms to buy and sell individual stocks multiple times in a fraction of a second. This approach is designed to maximize micro-profits with each trade, and aggregating them over time can yield positive results.

The problem with this approach is that a company?s fundamental financial value is completely overlooked by this type of investor. The threat to society from this activity is not hypothetical. Two years ago, the so-called "flash crash" took the Dow Jones average down more than 1,000 points in a matter of minutes.

While these glitches are eventually identified and explained, they illustrate the vulnerability of technology and its impact on investor confidence in the markets. For when the markets are volatile, investors park their money in cash. The purpose of investing is to raise capital in pursuit of enterprise, profit and economic growth, and this is simply not possible when investors are afraid of the infrastructure and an environmental of stability that facilitates such investment.

Tech Investor Bill Liao to Speak at Berlin SmartCamp Regional Final ...

On Nov. 13-14 IBM SmartCamp will be holding its EMEA Regional Finals in Berlin, and among the distinguished speakers we are delighted to welcome tech investor Bill Liao, recently named by CNNMoney one of the 25 most influential tech investors on Twitter.

Liao is an?Australian?entrepreneur, social networking pioneer, author, speaker, and?philanthropist.?He is currently a venture partner with SOSventures and is the founder of?the WeForest Movement, a non-profit organization set up to counter global warming through reforesting the Earth.

Liao is also a regular attendee at the?TED conferences?and also the World Economic Forum New Champions conference and?was also the Director of Operations (DOO) of telecommunications company Davnet, which achieved the fastest capital value growth in the history of the Australian Stock exchange?and which aggregated Internet access in the riser space?of office buildings.

In 2011 he co-founded ?CoderDojo??www.coderdojo.com,?a not-for-profit organisation that teaches kids how to code. It aims to teach kids creative problem-solving skills and practical creative skills.

Liao, who co-founded the German-based social network Xing, joined SOS Ventures last year to focus on discovering and financing Internet and social media companies. He?s invested in companies like the Web site Silicon Republic and the online teach materials site Teachable. In a recent memorable Tweet he said: ?All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.?

Perhaps this advice could prove valuable for up-and-coming entrepreneurs, along with the other advice Liao has to offer on?makeitcrisp.com, which, as the name suggests, urges entrepreneurs to keep their pitches crisp and tell a riveting story. The three parts to a riveting story, he says, are crisis, struggle, and resolution.

The crisis part of the story is what is missing for the customer; what they want or need. The struggle is what you did to solve that crisis; what did you figure out, work on, or overcome? Purses With A Purpose Had Designer Names Raising Funds For ...

Michael Kors bag

Over at Samuel Lynne Galleries in the Design District, more than 200 items were up for auction at the Purses With A Purpose event Tuesday, benefiting Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Dallas. Among them: beautiful bags by Beijo, Gianni Bernini, Anne Klein and Michael Kors.

In addition to the purses were jewelry and services, as well as a wine pull.

Since it was filled to the gills with females, it was only appropriate that Pinky?s, the all-gal valet service, was hustling vehicles. And hustle they were. The doors had hardly opened and the lineup at the check-in was backed up all the way.

Under the direction of Kathaleen Bauer, chair of the volunteer host committee, the third annual Purses event aimed to raise $80,000, up from about $65,000 in 2011 and $34,000 the year before. The proceeds go toward CCCS?s community outreach and financial-education efforts for low-income women.

Sherry Maffia and Deborah Ferguson

There?s no doubt there?s a need. CCCS served 73,000 clients last year, two-thirds of them women. Many have been struggling with long-term unemployment, mortgage delinquencies or home foreclosures in the wake of the Great Recession. One CCCS client is 62-year-old Sherry Maffia, who was interviewed in front of at least 150 Purses guests by NBC 5 morning anchor Deborah Ferguson.

Maffia, an administrative assistant who lives in Carrollton, said she?s been working to pay off $15,000 in debt she incurred over five years. She wasn?t out spending lavishly, but trying to pay off her mother?s funeral bill and take care of a mentally-disabled brother, among other things. Thanks to the help of CCCS counselors, Maffia said, she should be debt-free by December.

Sherry?s story was also making headlines nationally that night, as she was the subject of a TV report by CBS?s Scott Pelley.

Investing In Memphis Real Estate - The City & The Comeback!

Investing In Memphis Real Estate - The City & The Comeback!

Posted by Chris Clothier on Sat, Oct 13, 2012

The most common question I get from interested real estate investors is "Why is Memphis a place I want to invest for the long-term?".? This week, Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton, Jr. made the answer easy for our company...and every other Memphis company spreading the word about our great city.?

Here is a copy of the letter from October, 11th from Mayor Wharton.? This is one of those classic examples of how leadership and dedication can inspire and propel a city forward.? From government leaders to civic leaders all the way to community leaders, optimism for the continued growth of our great city abounds.? As we all know, when a city has the right pieces in place, en environment for growth takes hold.

Growth in not only jobs and population, but also growth in incomes, business revenues, home sales and home values.? Growth hits in so many economic areas and it all starts with the right leadership from the top.? You can read the full letter below and visit the Memphis Connect website to see where it was originally posted.

This city is on the rise...and for long-term real estate investors, whether you pick Memphis for your investments or not, always invest based on where a city is going.? Memphis is going up!

All the best,

Chris

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends,
Memphis is a city abundant in deep roots, from the Old Growth Forest to the Greenline to the 4,500 acres of Shelby Farms Park.
But deep roots are not just reserved for our green spaces. From New Chicago to Soulsville, Orange Mound to Annesdale-Snowden, Uptown to Downtown to Midtown, Memphis is a close-knit city. We are bound together by our churches, our schools, our music, our spirit, and our soul.
Here are the crossroads, history is made not by worrying about what you don?t have, but by taking care of business with what you do.
Some cities never sleep, this one never rests.
Last year, Memphis went on the road with an award-winning Broadway show. Barack Obama, the President of the United States, came here to be inspired by a group of local high school students. With newcomers like Electrolux and Mitsubishi Electric joining the familiar faces of KTG USA and Riviana Foods, Memphis received $1 billion in economic investment.
More recently, the world saw this city?s grit and determination in the Academy Award-winning documentary ?Undefeated.? It recognized its heart when the Memphis Grizzlies won ?Beyond Sport Team of the Year? during the London Olympics for the team?s charitable efforts. It heard its siren song when 75,000 people paid tribute to Elvis Presley on the 35th anniversary of his death. And it celebrated this city?s creativity and culture when Cooper-Young was named one of the 10 best neighborhoods in the country.
Each and every day, Memphis is branching out. You can call it a comeback, but for those who have lived here and left, now is the perfect time for them to return to their roots.
Even for those who have never been here, this may be the perfect place to put down some new ones.
With support from the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Greater Memphis Chamber, and Sullivan Branding, we invite you to send the Comeback video to the former and future Memphians in your life and invite them home. Help us change the world, again.
Yours in Service,
A C Wharton, Jr.
Mayor of Memphis
Is Libya terrorist attack 'debacle' hurting Obama?
The White House and the Obama campaign are under fire for the administration's handling of the terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the US ambassador and three other embassy personnel. The Romney campaign is attacking Obama on the issue.
By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / October 13, 2012
Ambassador Patrick Kennedy, under secretary for management at the State Department, answers questions during the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing Wednesday regarding the terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
The first question in the vice presidential debate this week ? the one that is becoming most troublesome for the Obama-Biden ticket ? was about Libya and the deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.
'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->
The essence of the query to Vice President Joe Biden was as old as Watergate: ?What did you know and when did you know it??
That is, shouldn?t you have anticipated the possibility of a terrorist attack, especially on the anniversary of 9/11 when US Ambassador Christopher Stevens made what turned out to be a fatal visit to Benghazi, an area known to include Al Qaeda sympathizers?
And why did the administration persist in describing the attack that killed Ambassador Stevens and three other embassy personnel as tied to protests across the region to a crude anti-Islam YouTube video ? protests, as UN Ambassador Susan Rice said some days later, that "seems to have been hijacked ? by some individual clusters of extremists who came with heavier weapons.?
IN PICTURES:?Libya's critical transition
As it turns out, there were no protests tied to the offensive video, and the attack by terrorists seems obviously to have been pre-planned and well-executed against a lightly-defended facility. What?s more, according to congressional testimony this past week, requests for beefed-up security had been made to the State Department.
Mr. Biden?s answer to debate moderator Martha Raddatz: ?We weren?t told they wanted more security there. We did not know they wanted more security.?
But as Washington Post fact checker Glenn Kessler reported Friday, ?Biden?s bold statement was directly contradicted by State Department officials just this week, in testimony before a congressional panel and in?unclassified cables released by a congressional committee.?
?All of us at post were in sync that we wanted these resources,? said Eric Nordstrom, the top regional security officer in Libya earlier this year. A Utah National Guardsman who led a security team, Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, said: ?We felt great frustration that those requests were ignored or just never met.?
The story changed, Biden tried to explain, as more information became available.
?We said exactly what the intelligence community told us that they knew,? Biden said. ?That was the assessment. And as the intelligence community changed their view, we made it clear they changed their view.?
That is probably true, and it?s no doubt true that security at diplomatic facilities around the world is handled by the State Department, not the White House.
Still, the buck stops with the president. And Obama no doubt will be faced with the same kind of questioning Biden was when he meets Mitt Romney for the second presidential debate ? to be held this coming Tuesday in town hall format and scheduled to include questions on foreign policy and national security.
Career Expo ? Technical Writing
Before attending the career expo, I thought the trip to the event served no purpose to me since I am just a sophomore in my major with very little experience. Soon as I walked through the doors of the event I was immediately proven wrong. The volume of people in attendance was a great sight in seeing how many students are out networking as well as the number of major airlines willing to actually communicate and offer interviews for internship and full time jobs for the qualified students. Overall my experience was amazing I am more that glad that this is something offered on our campus designated to Embry-Riddle students looking for a steady career.
Along with the experience of walking around the expo and seeing which Aviation companies were in attendance to the career expo I also got the pleasure to meet with AAR Corporation , Southwest Airlines, Enterprise, Delta, United, and American Airlines.? Out of this selection of companies that I spoke with I received excellent information from four of the five companies, even better I was personally handed the opportunity to speak with the Vice President of AAR Corporation in preparation to applying for a possible internship in my hometown Chicago.
This was a great experience that I found interesting and beneficial to my future career path, the effort that was shown by the employers as well as the interest in me based off my energy and personality, specifically after speaking with AAR Corporation. The recruiter enthusiasm and his attempt in getting me in contact with the Vice President of AAR Corporation lead me to believe if I push and keep pushing I can get to where I want to be in life. Now I just have to do my job and follow up with the company and do my research and understand what this company role is in the aviation industry.
The feedback I received was wonderful and very effective to me as a future business woman in the Aviation industry. The quotes below are almost everything I can recall which was basically everything I was told. ?Now is a perfect time to look for internships?, ?don?t just limit myself to on application?, ?Network, and get to know the people in my filed? and ?Internships are a great way to get me one step closer towards my career.? Everything listed are actual words I was told from various business people, these words of inspiration are some words I will not forget. They all played a very special meaning in my search and I will continue to push until and beyond the point of me reaching my success.
95% Searching for Sugar Man
All Critics (96) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (91) | Rotten (5)
The search for a long-lost pop icon has an unexpected payoff.
[A] moving, lyrical account ...
Director Malik Bendjelloul's engaging, cleverly structured documentary about the legendary folk singer Rodriguez is shaped like a mystery.
If you like music, a good mystery or, better yet, a combination of both, you won't be disappointed.
An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights.
Submitted for your approval: one Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter whom Rod Serling would surely embrace, in or out of the Twilight Zone.
There's a fascinating story in the rise and fall of singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, "the Latin Bob Dylan," and it's too bad that the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man" doesn't tell enough of it.
A soulful, lip-tremblingly joyous movie that's one of the more affecting experiences I've had in a cinema this year.
Engrossing even when it's a little unfocused.
One of the most bizarre pop music documentaries ever...a singularly fascinating true-life tale that many of its participants still find difficult to believe.
...it isn't merely the content that makes Searching for Sugar Man so affecting: it's the way that Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul sets up the story and peels away the mystery of Rodriguez, one layer at time.
A mystery as compelling as any fictional detective story.
The first half of this film is mysterious whereas the second half is wonderfully inspiring. It's proof that truth really is stranger than fiction.
This is a fine documentary; insightful and entertaining with a genteel approach to uncovering a figure so close to the hearts of an unexpected fan base.
A celebration of an artist and the power of art to transcend time and place
Much credit to director Malik Bendjelloul for surprising this cynical and desensitised film watcher.
For those familiar with the story of Rodriguez, this engaging documentary on his substantial success in South Africa will prove both illuminating and bemusing.
I was instantly hooked by this unique documentary...If you are a traveller on the road of life, don't miss this unforgettable treasure of a film
This is not only the best documentary I've seen this year, it's one that shows other documentaries how to do it.
Searching for Sugar Man reminds us that a wise man knows lasting riches are never the result of record sales.
Searching for Sugar Man" is a saga about the power of music, living life on one's own terms and the joy of second chances.
Two fans, Stephen Segerman and Craig Bertholomew, made it their business to find out exactly what happened to the singer Rodriguez. And, "Searching for Sugar Man" is the fruits of their labor. The fruit is tasting pretty sweet.
It starts as a bittersweet parable about the cruelty of commerce, but the wonder of "Searching for Sugar Man" will not soon slip away.
New Linkedin Feature: Endorsements ? IsaGeeks
I don?t usually have a reason to write about Linkedin, which is weird, considering most of the people who read this blog are business owners.
Unfortunately, the reason I don?t write about Linkedin more is most people don?t seem to actively use it. For such a long time it was just an online resume people forgot about.
It has grown into a lot more than that, though ? you can leave status messages there, you can create a profile for your business, and you can ask/answer questions with other industry professionals. Think of it as Facebook with a productive purpose.
When people go looking for information on you and your business, a Linkedin profile is a handy thing. It can tell people about you and your history. It gives people a context for who you are and can help build their trust with you.
Now Linked has added a new feature, Endorsements ? and it?s really something you should take advantage of.
Here?s the deal: Last year, Linkedin introduced Skills. This was a little extra on your profile where you could add a quick tag for all the things you?re good at. If you are an experienced carpenter, for example, you might add:
Renovation
Remodeling
Sustainable Design
Aging in Place
Additions
This would give people who view your profile a better idea of what you?re good at, and what you think your strong points are.
Naturally, this comes with a problem: Just because someone says they?re good at these things doesn?t necessarily mean they are.
This is where Endorsements come in. Now your contacts ? the people you?ve presumably worked with ? can essentially give you a vote for these skills.
Let?s say you listed ?Public Speaking? as one of your skills. If you have contacts you?ve done public speaking with before, they can now come in and give you a quick vote of confidence. If a number of people do the same thing, someone looking at your profile can see not only that YOU think public speaking is your strong suit, but a bunch of other people agree.
In a real sense, this is what social networking really is: Getting the people in your circle to participate in what you post.
If you have a Linkedin profile already, make sure you have some skills added to it ? if you don?t, people can?t give you these endorsements.
If you do have a profile AND skills, start endorsing your contacts. That way, they?ll be encouraged to return the favor.
Armstrong unfazed by doping maelstrom
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Unrepentant and seemingly unconcerned, Lance Armstrong was going about his business as usual on Thursday as the cycling world was left reeling by the revelations about his alleged role as a doping ringleader.
Five of his former team mates who confessed to using performance enhancing drugs were formally banned by USA Cycling on Thursday while Spanish authorities were reviewing the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) documentation after three of their nationals were implicated.
The International Olympic Committee was also sifting through the mountain of evidence that USADA said proved that Armstrong cheated his way to the top while the riders and officials were assessing the latest damage to the sport's already tarnished image.
"It is understandable now for people to look at any results in cycling and question that," the head of British cycling Dave Brailsford told BBC radio. "It completely and utterly lost its way and I think it lost its moral compass."
Bradley Wiggins, who won this year's Tour de France, said he was shocked at the scale of the evidence against Armstrong, who was banned for life and stripped of his seven Tour de France wins by USADA last month after electing not to fight the doping charges against him.
"It's pretty damning stuff," Wiggins told Sky Sports news. "It is jaw-dropping the amount of people who have testified against him."
Armstrong, 41, has always denied any wrongdoing and has yet to comment on USADA's report.
On Thursday, he seemed oblivious to the storm, tweeting: "Hanging @LIVESTRONGHQ w/ the team talking about next week's events and plans for 2013. Can't wait to see so many friends and supporters."
The Texan's lawyers spoke for him, attacking USADA's investigation as an unconstitutional "witch hunt", but the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said the American watchdog had done a thorough job in trying circumstances.
"We would like to commend USADA for having the courage and the resolve to keep focused in working on this difficult case for the sake of clean athletes and the integrity of sport," said WADA president John Fahey in a statement.
There was little immediate reaction from his sponsors although Nike reissued a statement they first released last month, standing by him.
SIX-MONTH BAN
Five of the American cyclists who testified against Armstrong - Tom Danielson, George Hincapie, Levi Leipheimer, Christian Vande Velde and David Zabriskie - were each banned for six months.
"As a result of their testimony in the Lance Armstrong investigation, USA Cycling will enforce these sanctions and is currently reviewing the impact of the sanctions on historical results," USA Cycling Chief Executive Steve Johnson said in a statement.
"More importantly, I would like to personally acknowledge the extraordinary courage of these riders who placed their careers on the line in order to come forward with their experiences of past doping practices."
Spain's Anti-Doping Agency (AEA) was examining USADA's report to see whether additional action could be taken against doctors Luis Garcia del Moral and Pedro Celaya and coach Jose Marti, who were all part of Armstrong's U.S. Postal Service Pro Cycling Team.
Garcia del Moral has already been banned for life while Celaya and Marti have elected to fight the charges against them.
"... the AEA is conducting a detailed study to determine whether the published documents should be passed to the (Spanish) ministry, as well as medical organizations and federations, so they can decide if there are relevant facts that should be analyzed or prosecuted within their respective competences," the Spanish agency said in a statement.
The IOC was undecided about whether it would consider stripping Armstrong of the bronze medal he won in Sydney, but said the case was being reviewed.
"It would be premature at this stage to say whether the IOC is contemplating any action," an IOC official told Reuters.
"Should we come across any evidence that would justify opening a disciplinary procedure we would of course act accordingly." (Editing by Greg Stutchbury)
South Korea delays ban on iPads and iPhones until Apple can appeal
iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus
Apple and Samsung have been recreating the Cold War through their own mutually assured destruction policy, and nowhere is that more apparent than their Pyrrhic victories in South Korea. For Apple, however, the pain will be just a little easier to bear. A Seoul court has confirmed that it's staying the ban on older iPads and iPhones until Apple can complete the appeals process; the Cupertino crew won't face the full penalty unless the appeals court upholds the verdict. Samsung hasn't yet asked for a similar pause on a ban covering some of its Android devices, though, which could lead to at least a momentarily lopsided situation in Samsung's home country. It's nonetheless a brief reprieve in a war that sadly won't end anytime soon.
