Taylor Swift is under consideration for another major movie role.
After losing out on the character of Eponine in a big screen version of Les Miserables, Variety now reports that Swift may portray music legend Joni Mitchell in an upcoming biopic.
The film is being developed by Sony Pictures and Di Bonaventura Pictures' and would be an adaptation of Sheila Weller's book "Girls Like Us." The role would also mark Swift's first dramatic turn, as she recently voiced a character in The Lorax and appeared in Valentine's Day.
The movie will follow around the careers of Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King, with Alison Pill rumored for the latter artist.

Although the print version of the April 2012 issue of Harper's magazine has been out for a few weeks this week the digital version started making the rounds and one of its articles is attracting lots of notice, as well it should.
The article is "The Warrior Class: A golden age for the freelance soldier" (Note: it is behind a pay wall so only subscribers have full access).
It is by Charles Glass, a journalist, author, and publisher who has frequently reported from the Middle East.
The article follows the career of Tim Spicer, who goes way back in the private military and security contracting world. In fact, given that in 1996 he was the founder of Sandline International, one of the earlier PSCs, you might say he is a veteran of PSC world, Version 1.
In 2001 Spicer set up a partner firm specializing in anti-piracy consulting, called Trident Maritime. But it was in 2002, when Spicer established Aegis Defence Services, which around the beginning of the Iraq war was consulting for the Disney Cruise Line, that he emerged as one of the E.F. Hutton's of the PMSC realm, i.e., when Aegis speaks, people listen.
But the significance of Glass's article is not the story of Spicer's journey from retired British Army officer to ?ber successful risk consultancy heavyweight. Instead there are two other reasons.
First, it is a fascinating and detailed account of how one can parlay business and political connections to rise from an inauspicious beginning to become one of the most formidable companies in the PMSC sector. As Glass writes:
A year after 9/11, Spicer founded Aegis with three friends in London. Less than two years later, in May 2004, the U.S. government awarded the firm a contract for $293 million to provide security services in Iraq. And that was only the beginning of America's commitment to Aegis. By April 2011, reported the U.S. Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR), "Aegis had received over $1 billion for its services."
The details of that first contract, which we'll come back to, are:
By early 2004, when Spicer visited, Iraq had become among the most anarchic countries on earth. Militias, insurgents, and suicide bombers roamed at will. This precarious state of affairs had forced millions of people to flee. Bremer's demobilization of the Iraqi army and police added to the lawlessness.And PMCs, far from contributing to stability, made matters worse. Contractors were running amok, taking part in torture at Abu Ghraib, attacking civilians, shooting at one another, and occasionally firing on American forces. No one coordinated their operations, communications, or logistics.
With this lethal chaos as a backdrop, Spicer came up with a solution for the Defense Department: let a private-security company police private security. If a firm like Aegis could clamp down on the industry mayhem, it might remove some of the opprobrium created by Blackwater (four of whose employees had been attacked, killed, burned, and hanged from a bridge in Fallujah that March).
The second, and much more controversial, point comes toward the end of the article. Here Glass recounts meeting a security contractor who had worked for Blackwater -- since renamed Xe Services and most recently, Academi, in Iraq -- who reveals what he had seen in Iraq.
According to Glass, "He condemned his colleagues' actions, but admitted that he had been afraid to report them. Whistleblowers in PSCs had, to date, been fired rather than rewarded for heeding the dictates of their conscience."
Glass was unsure if he could believe the contractor but then he was offered some video footage that Blackwater operatives had taken in the field.
Each video clip opened with an onscreen date and location. The first, identified as "Baghdad, Iraq, May-September 2005," showed Blackwater convoys racing through town. Suddenly, the door of a Blackwater SUV opened and a rifle fired at passing traffic."They opened the door," my companion said. "You should never break the seal." A still photo showed some graffiti scrawled on a metal beam: this is for the americans of blackwater that were murdered here in 2004 semper fidelis 3/5 ps fuck you.
The next tape had been taken by a camera in the turret of an armored vehicle. An AK-47 fired from the turret at cars that had stopped to let the convoy pass. Whoever was firing the AK did so enthusiastically and often, sending rounds into parked cars and an overhead bridge. Another sequence showed a contractor vehicle rear-ending a car, shattering its back windshield.
The footage continued. A Humvee smashed into a car to move it out of the way. Guards swore at passersby. More armored vehicles smashed into civilian cars. Blackwater helicopters shot at targets below in a Baghdad street. When the action sequences stopped, still photos of booze parties began.
Doubtlessly some might this behavior deplorable, but hardly criminal. Indeed, Glass wrote, "One might argue that Aegis had been paid $293 million to stop the clashes between contractors, not to protect civilians. There was also the fact that although much of the behavior in the videos was boorish and menacing -- not the sort of thing to win Iraqi hearts and minds -- there was no proof that anybody had been harmed."
But then there was this.
But what about the tape dated April 1, 2006, which was shot from the front seat of the fourth car in an armored convoy? Driving along a wide boulevard in Baghdad, the lead vehicle swerved close to the curb of a traffic island. A woman in a black full-length burka began to cross the street. The vehicle struck the woman and knocked her unconscious body into the gutter. The cars slowed for a moment, but did not stop, nor did they even determine whether the victim was dead or alive.A voice in the car taking the video said, "Oh, my God!" Yet no one was heard on the radio requesting help for her. Most sickeningly, the sequence had been set to an AC/DC song, whose pounding, metallic chorus declared:
"You've been... thunderstruck!"
Interestingly, Blackwater used to be a member of the then named International Peace Operations Association, now ISOA, one of the more prominent PMSC trade associations. In fact Blackwater was a member of IPOA until October 2007. Its departure occurred before an IPOA investigation after the killing of Iraqi civilians by Blackwater contractors at Nisoor Square, Baghdad in September 2007.
ISOA has long touted its unenforceable Code of Conduct as a tool for promoting the "high operational and ethical standards of firms active in the peace and stability operations industry."
Among its provisions are sections such as this:
Signatories shall respect the dignity of all human beings and adhere to all applicable international humanitarian and human rights laws.Signatories shall take appropriate measures to minimize loss of life and destruction of property and cultural elements, and harm to the environment.
Evidently Blackwater wasn't taking it very seriously. Blackwater is no longer a member of ISOA, but one can't help but wonder what would have happened if ISOA had known of the video's existence. Would it have investigated? If so, how? Do something on its own or ask Blackwater to look into it? And, if Blackwater had said, we checked and it was just a tragic accident which could not have been avoided would IPOA just have accepted that?
Sadly, we'll never know.

HEBRON, West Bank (AP) ? Israeli security forces swiftly evicted dozens of Jewish settlers from an illegally occupied building in this volatile West Bank city on Wednesday, ending a weeklong standoff that had threatened to spill over into broader violence.
The raid caught the settlers off guard. Only a day earlier, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had moved to block the eviction order. Settler supporters in Netanyahu's hard-line government condemned the surprise raid, a key political ally threatened to quit the coalition and settler leaders vowed retaliation.
"He is expelling us from our property and land," said David Wilder, spokesman for Hebron's tiny, ultranationalist settler community. "We will be back in that building. It belongs to us."
Hebron, the traditional burial site of Abraham, the shared patriarch of both Jews and Muslims, is the only place where Jews live in the heart of a West Bank city. Arab-Israeli violence there dates back decades, and clashes are frequent.
About 850 settlers now live in Hebron in heavily guarded enclaves among 180,000 Palestinians. Hundreds of Israeli soldiers enforce a rigid separation between the two sides.
The settlers seized the home in an overnight raid last Thursday, claiming they had purchased it from a Palestinian landowner. But the military subsequently ordered them to leave the building because they had not received proper approval to live there.
After Netanyahu's call for a legal review of the matter on Tuesday, it appeared the evictions would be on hold. But government officials said Netanyahu's attorney general determined the home should be cleared out immediately.
Hundreds of police ringed the apartment building around midday on Wednesday. Settler leaders said about 70 people moved into the building last week. But only 15 or so, including children, were inside when the raid was launched, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.
He said an eviction order was ripped up by one of the people inside, but otherwise there was no resistance.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who oversees the military occupation of the West Bank, promised to "continue to act to uphold the law and democracy while safeguarding the state's authority over its citizens."
Authorities were still investigating whether the house was legally purchased as the settlers claim, Barak said.
Barak heads a small, centrist faction in a government coalition that is otherwise dominated by hard-line parties sympathetic to Jewish settlers, who are intent on cementing Israel's control over the West Bank.
Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who heads the nationalist Yisrael Beitenu party, said the settler eviction "shakes the stability of the coalition."
Hebron settlers are among the most militant in the West Bank, territory they believe God promised to Jews.
After Wednesday's raid, one of the most militant settler leaders, Baruch Marzel, warned of retaliatory attacks.
"No one wants more violence," Marzel said, but added that "when the racist government that doesn't let the Jews buy a house in the land of Israel ... I think violence is a reaction to the racist government."
The raid came shortly after Netanyahu announced new moves to try to save unauthorized settler construction in the West Bank from demolition.
The prime minister said he asked the attorney general to find a way to save the unauthorized Ulpana outpost from its Supreme Court-ordered demolition. Five apartment buildings are to be razed by May 1.
Netanyahu said he also plans to supply the necessary approvals to legalize three other enclaves settlers built without government authorization.
About 500,000 Jews have moved to the West Bank and east Jerusalem since Israel captured the territories in the 1967 Mideast war.
Palestinians want both territories as the heart of their hoped-for state and see all settlement there as undercutting their aspirations to statehood. The international community opposes all settlement construction.
On Tuesday, Israel announced it was pushing forward with an earlier plan to build hundreds of new homes in a Jewish neighborhood in east Jerusalem.
A Construction Ministry spokesman said the latest move, seeking builders for the project, means that construction could start in the Har Homa neighborhood within a year.
Settlements in occupied territory have been the key sticking point since Netanyahu became prime minister three years ago.
Negotiations have been largely frozen during that time, though Netanyahu will hold a rare meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad after the Jewish Passover holiday ends in late April, officials on both sides said. U.S. Mideast envoy David Hale is in the region trying to get peace efforts back on track.
Palestinian officials said Fayyad would present a letter asking to resume peace talks based on several conditions Netanyahu has rejected in the past. They include basing border talks on lines Israel held before capturing the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip in 1967 and recognizing east Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 but still controls its land crossing with the territory and blockades its coast.
In other developments, the Israeli military shot dead a Palestinian man who approached Gaza's border with Israel overnight. The military said it suspected he was a militant. There was no word on the man's identity.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? The crowd ? both men and women ? cheered wildly as two Mogadishu basketball teams entered an old stadium that once bore the bloodstains of war.
During the recent reign of Islamist militants, playing basketball in Somalia's seaside capital was punishable by torture or death. Today, Somalia's blue flag has reclaimed its place over the battered Lujino Stadium, replacing the black banner of al-Shabab, the militant Islamist group that until a few months ago held sway over much of Mogadishu.
This seaside capital is full of life for the first time in 20 years. Since African Union and Somali troops pushed Islamist militants out of the city last year, schools, shops and markets have reopened. The city government has repaired potholed streets and installed streetlights. Turkish Airlines last month began weekly flights, advertised on billboards, marking the first time in decades that a reputable international carrier has regular flights to Mogadishu.
Western-style restaurants are opening, including near Mogadishu's beach front, where men and women swim together without fear of punishment from militants. People dance at weddings.
It's too early to say that the chaos, violence and hunger that have often gripped Mogadishu since 1991, when dictator Siad Barre was overthrown by warlords who then turned on each other, are gone for good. But a tectonic shift has occurred in the life of this city since al-Shabab's withdrawal last August. The group at one point had controlled all but a few blocks of the capital.
"I see so much difference as a longtime resident in Mogadishu," Abdiaziz Nur, a 31-year-old Mogadishu resident, said at a cafe where he was smoking a hookah. "I had never dreamed that I would either walk through Mogadishu's streets or drive my car at night, but now we feel glorified and proud."
The war is still sometimes felt in the capital, with a mortar round or car bomb exploding every few days. Unexploded munitions are also a danger ? an old bomb embedded in ground being used as a soccer field exploded last month as a team jumped up and down in celebration of a goal, killing two players and wounded three.
But the violence is nowhere near the scale previously seen, and al-Shabab's strict social rules are no longer enforced in a capital whose population is believed to be between 1.5 million and 3 million. No one knows how many people live in Mogadishu, because until now it has been too dangerous to conduct a census.
Changes are coming with stunning speed.
A Somali-American entrepreneur is investing millions of dollars to open the first international bank here in more than two decades. The First Somali Bank, protected by 10 guards, plans to offer mortgage loans and international banking services.
"The city is returning to normal now. Thanks to Allah we can do business here again," said Liban Abdi Igal, the bank's chairman, who was recently living in Maryland. "I have returned here with optimism after seeing progress and revival."
After getting a facelift, the national theater reopened for the first time in 20 years. The opening concert on March 19 featured musicians playing guitars and drums. The performance was broadcast live on TV. Beauty salons and gyms are again flourishing in Mogadishu. Women have started driving cars, and Somalis play music on radios without fear.
Despite the advances, poverty is still prevalent in much of the city. Thousands of refugees displaced by famine last year sleep on dusty lots. Unemployment is widespread. Women with children on their laps sit on street corners, hoping for a handout.
Nowhere is Mogadishu's transformation more clearly observed than on its many sports fields.
Just a year ago, al-Shabab used Mogadishu's stadium as a launching pad for attacks against the nearby presidential palace. Mortars fired by pro-government forces sometimes landed inside the stadium. Blood stained the walls and the stone bleacher seats, even the goal posts. After al-Shabab left, residents washed the blood away.
The coach of Somalia's national basketball team, Daud Diriye, never thought he'd see the day when sports came back to the city. His team is even traveling to Uganda to play in a tournament.
"Having endured the strict rule of the Islamists for so much time, I thought my training days were over," the 53-year-old potbellied coach said.
On a recent day, Shukri Saeed was next to a male basketball fan at a game and excitedly spoke of the city's changes.
"Sports are witnessing a revival nowadays, and everyone is in charge of his own destiny," she said.
Hundreds of men and women were joking, chewing gum and enjoying simple pleasures together at the game. Al-Shabab had banned males and females from sitting together in public as a violation of Sharia law. Violators faced public whipping or imprisonment.
Across the war-scarred capital, dozens of soccer fields fill with players. The revival of sports has not only brought ordinary Somalis outside, it has also pulled young militants away from the hold of insurgent groups.
"I have three al-Shabab defectors who want a new, entertaining life," Daud said, glancing at two men struggling to catch a bouncing ball.
Mogadishu residents are even going out at night to watch sports competitions ? a normal activity most anywhere else in the world but a forgotten pleasure here.
Mohamed Hashi, a 64-year-old former basketball player, watched a crowd arriving at the stadium with tears in his eyes.
"The grim days are over," he said.
