Astrophysicists identify a 'super-Jupiter' around a massive star

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Astrophysicists at the University of Toronto and other institutions across the United States, Europe and Asia have discovered a 'super-Jupiter' around the massive star Kappa Andromedae. The object, which could represent the first new observed exoplanet system in almost four years, has a mass at least 13 times that of Jupiter and an orbit somewhat larger than Neptune's.

The host star around which the planet orbits has a mass 2.5 times that of the Sun, making it the highest mass star to ever host a directly observed planet. The star can be seen with the naked eye in the constellation Andromeda at a distance of about 170 light years.

"Our teamidentified a faint object located very close to Kappa Andromedae in January that looks much like other young, massive directly imaged planets but does not look like a star," said Thayne Currie, a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Toronto and coauthor of a paper titled "Direct imaging of a `super-Jupiter' around a massive star" to be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters. "It's likely a directly imaged planet." The report on the study can be viewed on arXiv.org at http://arxiv.org/abs/1211.3744.

The researchers made the discovery based on an infrared imaging search carried out as part of the Strategic Explorations of Exoplanets and Disks with Subaru (SEEDS) program using the Subaru telescope located in Hawaii.

"Kappa Andromedae moves fast across the sky so it will appear to change position relative to more distant, background objects," Currie says. "When we reobserved it in July at multiple wavelengths, we saw the faint object again, located at about the same position as it was in January. This indicates that it is bound to the star and not an unrelated background object." Labelled by the researchers Kappa And b, it could be the first direct rendering of an exoplanet in two years and of a new exoplanet system in almost four years, ending a significant drought in the field.

In a single infrared snapshot, the tiny point of light that is Kappa And b is completely lost amid the overwhelming glare of the host star. The SEEDS observing team was able to distinguish the object's faint light using a technique known as angular differential imaging, which combines a time-series of individual images in a manner that allows for the otherwise overwhelming glare of the host star to be removed from the final, combined image.

Young planets retain significant heat from their formation, enhancing the brightness at infrared wavelengths. This makes young star systems attractive targets for direct imaging planet searches. However, despite this fact, the successful direct imaging of extrasolar planets is exceptionally rare, especially for orbital separations akin to our own solar system planets. The extraordinary differences in brightness between a star and a planet are a primary reason why only a handful of planets have ever been directly imaged around stars.

"Although astronomers have found over 750 planets around other stars, we actually directly detect light from the atmosphere of only a few of them," said Currie. "There are approximately six now. Kappa And b is one of them if our estimates for its age and mass are correct, which we think they are. The rest are only inferred directly."

The large mass of both the host star and gas giant provide a sharp contrast with our own solar system. Observers and theorists have argued recently that large stars like Kappa Andromedae are likely to have large planets, perhaps following a simple scaled-up model of our own solar system. But experts predict that there is a limit to such extrapolations; if a star is too massive, its powerful radiation may disrupt the normal planet formation process that would otherwise occur. The discovery of the super-Jupiter around Kappa Andromedae demonstrates that stars as large as 2.5 solar masses are still fully capable of producing planets within their primordial circumstellar disks.

"This planetary system is very different from our own," Currie says. "The star is much more massive than our Sun and Kappa And b is at least 10 times more massive than any planet in the solar system. And, Kappa And b is located further from the star than any of the solar system planets are from the Sun. Because it is generally much harder to form massive planets at large distances from the parent star, Kappa And b could really be a challenge for our theories about how planets form."

The SEEDS research team continues to study the Kappa And b emitted light across a broad wavelength range, in order to better understand the atmospheric chemistry of the gas giant, and constrain the orbital characteristics. The researchers also continue to explore the system for possible secondary planets, which may have influenced the Kappa And b formation and orbital evolution. These follow-up studies will yield further clues to the formation of the super-Jupiter, and planet formation in general around massive stars.

Skin Cancer Forum - Already scheduled for Wide Excision before ...

I had a mole removed last week (suspected deep penetrating blue nevus I've had for 20 years), and because of the unexpected depth, the PA brought in the Dermatologist. They decided to just cover the partial-removal and scheduled me for a wide excision next week. I am obviously still waiting for pathology results, but has anyone had this happen before? I am slightly nervous about the seemingly unorthadox method.

Change Management or Change Leadership? | CBO Projects

We believe it is BOTH.

In order to help defrost a hardened status quo within your organisation you are going to need people that carry both change management and change leadership skills and ability.

A definition or two is always a good starting point:

Management?is a set of processes that keep a system of people or technology running smoothly. Key aspects of management will include planning, budgeting, organising, controlling and problem solving.

Leadership?is a set of processes that creates organisations in the first place or adapts them to significantly changing circumstances and environments. Leadership defines what the future should look like, aligns people to that vision, and inspires them to make it happen despite the obstacles.

The process of managing change is extremely important. Without competent management the business transformation effort will get out of control. For most organisations, the bigger challenge comes with leading change. Strong leadership can remove the various sources of organisational apathy and it can motivate the actions required to alter behaviour within the organisation.

Leadership will get change to stick by embedding it into the culture of your organisation.?

Pressure on organisations to transform is only going to increase and grow over the coming years and decades. The increased pressure is going make learning and understanding what creates and enables successful change even more critical for organisations. Understanding of the processes involved in managing change is critical, alongside understanding the driving force behind the change processes which is leadership.

With the States of Jersey recently announcing the appointment of a Change Leader (under the title of Director of Organisational Development) there will be questions raised about the ?value for money? with this type of role. But in today?s climate the question should be asked of the cost of not having change leadership and change management skills within your organisation?

Mind you, you can always be an organisation that rejects change??He who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery.? ? Harold Wilson

Windows 8 sales have been 'slow going,' Microsoft said to be blaming OEMs

We've already heard about Windows RT's "modest" beginning, and now there's talk full-blown Windows 8 ain't flying off the shelves either. According to MS aficionado Paul Thurrott and one of his "most trusted sources," uptake of the new OS isn't hitting Redmond's targets, with the blame being put on OEMs and their "inability to deliver" more inspiring hardware with better availability. Some corroboration of Windows 8's tricky birth comes from Merle McIntosh, senior VP of product management of NewEgg, who says the online retailer was "prepared for an explosion" at launch, but that sales have "been slow going" to date. However, he says that early sales figures shouldn't be compared to Windows 7, since that OS arrived to "solve a Vista problem." He expects Windows 8 to gain traction in Q2 2013 when "pricing normalizes," which would certainly help to temper any launch frustrations.

Apartments in Japan ? some things to remember ? Real Estate ...

Japan Apartments at duskRenting isn?t easy. It leaves your pockets almost empty so you?re going to have to prepare financially for renting a place out.

There are various payments to make during the process:

Chukai Tesuryo (real estate agent?s fee) ? this is non-refundable and is typically one month?s rent.

Shikikin ? a security deposit, typically two or three months? rent

Reikin ? is a mandatory payment to the landlord that is often the same amount as the original deposit. However, reikin can be the equivalent of six months (or more) of rent, but is typically the same as one to three months of rent. This money is considered a gift to the landlord and is not returned after the lease is canceled.

Tetsukeikin (reservation fee) ? This is the real estate agent?s way of making sure that you?re serious about the deal. It is refunded as soon as you sign the contracts.

Older places sometimes waive the key money. However, they will charge a commission fee equal to 1.05 of the monthly rent. Exceptions depend on the area and the type of place you?re renting. Most apartments are unfurnished, and because of this, you?re going to need more money to furnish your apartment. But one good thing to remember is that the amount of shikikin and reikin are often negotiable.

Let?s say you?re financially stable and have saved enough to pay for those fees. The next thing you have to ensure is a guarantor. This is basically a co-signer to the rental agreement. It is much better to have a close Japanese friend as your guarantor, also because most rental contracts are in Japanese and it would be much better if you have someone who can help you understand the terms and conditions to avoid confusion. Agents listed on realestate.co.jp do specialize in dealing with foreigners but you will find some cases where the landlords simply don?t want to deal in English.

Your guarantor has to be someone with a good credit history. Sometimes, your employer may volunteer to act as your guarantor. But there are also private companies known as hoshonin-gaisha that can act as your guarantor for a fee.

TIPS AND WARNINGS?

?

- Inquire on multiple apartments. Remember that paying key money and other fees is pretty heavy, but paying twice is worse.

- Once you find a potential apartment, consider not only the fees or the amount you?re going to spend, but also the surroundings. Safety is one of the things you should keep in mind, another is amenities. Some buildings will have the basic amenities and there are those that already come with air-conditioning and heating with the basic amenities.

- Take note of any defects, from floor to roof. These things are expensive if they have to be replaced.

- When it comes to contracts, be sure that you understand all the terms and conditions before signing it. Be sure that you pay your rent on time because this can be a good negotiating tool that may help you change the terms of your lease later.

- Real estate agents will show you an apartment once the current tenant has moved out. It is much better to visit the apartment during the day to get a good look at things.

With a little patience, you?ll manage to find a nice place to live. The worst thing you could do is to get stuck in an apartment you don?t like.

The road to language learning is iconic

Thursday, November 15, 2012

Languages are highly complex systems and yet most children seem to acquire language easily, even in the absence of formal instruction. New research on young children's use of British Sign Language (BSL) sheds light on one of the mechanisms - iconicity - that may endow children with this amazing ability.

For spoken and written language, the arbitrary relationship between a word's form ? how it sounds or how it looks on paper ? and its meaning is a particularly challenging feature of language acquisition. But one of the first things people notice about sign languages is that signs often represent aspects of meaning in their form. For example, in BSL the sign EAT involves bringing the hand to the mouth just as you would if you were bringing food to the mouth to eat it.

In fact, a high proportion of signs across the world's sign languages are similarly iconic, connecting human experience to linguistic form.

Robin Thompson and colleagues David Vison, Bencie Woll, and Gabriella Vigliocco at the Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL) at University College London in the United Kingdom wanted to examine whether this kind of iconicity might provide a key to understanding how children come to link words to their meaning.

Their findings are published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

The researchers looked at data from 31 deaf children who were being raised in deaf BSL signing families in the United Kingdom. Parents indicated the number of words understood and produced by their children between the ages of 8 and 30 months. The researchers decided to focus on 89 specific signs, examining children's familiarity with the signs as well as the iconicity and complexity of the signs.

The findings reveal that younger (11-20 months) and older (21-30 months) children comprehended and produced more BSL signs that were iconic than those that were less iconic. And the benefit of iconicity seemed to be greater for the older children. Importantly, this relationship did not seem to depend on how familiar, complex or concrete the words were.

Together, these findings suggest that iconicity could play an important role in language acquisition.

Thompson and colleagues hypothesize that iconic links between our perceptual-motor experience of the world and the form of a sign may provide an imitation-based mechanism that supports early sign acquisition. These iconic links highlight motor and perceptual similarity between actions and signs such as DRINK, which is produced by tipping a curved hand to the mouth and represents the action of holding a cup and drinking from it.

The researchers emphasize that these results can also be applied to spoken languages, in which gestures, tone of voice, inflection, and face-to-face communication can help make the link between words and their meanings less arbitrary.

"We suggest that iconicity provides scaffolding ? a middle-ground ? to bridge the "great divide" between linguistic form and bodily experience for both sign language and spoken language learners," says Thompson.

Obama's Approval Rating, Popularity Spike After Election

There may not be a consensus yet on how much political capital President Obama picked up in his re-election, but a number of post-election polls suggest his victory did wonders for his public standing.

A USA Today/Gallup survey released on Friday showed Obama and his party drawing goodwill from much of the country in the wake of their triumph at the ballot box last week. Fifty-eight percent of Americans have a favorable view of the president ? up 3 points from the USA Today/Gallup poll conducted right before the election. It's also his highest favorability rating in the poll since July of 2009.

The public's views of Democrats are also positive in the wake of a largely successful election for the party. Fifty-one percent of those surveyed have a favorable impression of the party, a 6-point bump since August and a more impressive showing than the 43 percent who have a favorable view of the Republican Party. Fifty percent have an unfavorable opinion of the GOP, although Gallup notes that "Americans have been negative on balance toward the Republican Party since late 2005."

Obama's increasingly strong standing calls to mind the bullish days of his first year in office before a stagnant economy and protracted disputes with Congressional Republicans took a toll on his approval rating. If the polls over the last week are any indication, all it took was a victorious election for Obama to earn higher marks for his job performance.

Rasmussen showed Obama's approval rating reaching 54 percent on Monday ? his highest mark in the right-leaning tracking poll since July 2009. It ticked up another point the next day. Meanwhile, Gallup's tracking poll on Wednesday showed only 40 percent of Americans disapproving of Obama's job as president, the lowest level since early 2010. Obama's job approval has topped 50 percent in every Rasmussen and Gallup poll conducted entirely after last week's election.

The national winds at his back, Obama's post-election bump has extended to a pair of hotly contested battlegrounds as well. Quinnipiac University released two polls this week showing the president's approval rating at 52 percent in both Pennsylvania and Virginia, amounting to upticks of 2 and 3 points respectively since October.

The PollTracker Average shows the gains Obama has made in the last week, already illustrating a clear post-election trend.

Laptop with NASA workers' data is stolen

8 hrs.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida ??NASA was informing employees this week that a laptop computer with personnel information such as Social Security numbers was stolen from a locked car two weeks ago, potentially putting thousands of workers and contractors at risk.

The laptop, issued to an employee at NASA headquarters in Washington, was password protected but its disk was not fully encrypted, NASA wrote employees in a letter dated Tuesday and distributed this week.

"Information on the laptop could be accessible to unauthorized individuals," wrote Richard Keegan, the agency's associate deputy administrator.

The security breach affects thousands of employees and contractors at NASA facilities around the United States.

The agency is investigating the theft. It also has hired ID Experts, a data breach specialist, to follow up with individuals whose information was on the computer.

"Because of the amount of information that must be reviewed and validated, it may take up to 60 days for all individuals impacted by this breach to be identified and contacted," Keegan said.

NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden banned the removal of unencrypted laptops containing sensitive information from any NASA facility and ordered security software upgrades to be finished by Dec.?21.

The agency also warned employees about storing sensitive data on smart phones and mobile devices.

The agency is offering employees free credit-monitoring services and other support.

The laptop theft is the latest in a string of NASA security breaches over the past few years. In March, a Kennedy Space Center worker's laptop that contained personal information on about 2,300 employees and students was stolen.

A NASA inspector general report this year determined 48 NASA laptops and mobile computing devices were lost or stolen between April 2009 and April 2011, many containing sensitive data.

Microsoft Phone Sales Jump 139% In Q3

Windows Phone 8: Star Features

Windows Phone 8: Star Features

(click image for larger view and for slideshow) Microsoft may be getting some traction in its effort to become a legit player in the smartphone market, as sales of devices that run its Windows Phone operating system climbed dramatically in the third quarter, according to market data released Wednesday.

Phone makers sold 4.06 million Microsoft-based devices worldwide, mostly running Windows Phone, in the third quarter, compared to 1.7 million in the same period a year ago, according to market watcher Gartner. That's a jump of 139%, and it pushed the company's share of the worldwide mobile OS market to 2.4%, up from 1.5% a year ago.

That's still miniscule. Google's Android OS saw its share climb from 52.5% to a dominant 72.4%. But it's enough to show that Microsoft is starting to make inroads against some competitors. Apple's iOS, which powers the iPhone, fell from 15% in Q3 2011 to 13.9% in Q3 2012. RIM's share, meanwhile, declined significantly, from 11% to 5.3%. The company is hoping the release of BlackBerry 10, slated for Jan. 30, will stem its losses.

Nokia's Symbian saw its share fall dramatically, from 16.9% to 2.6%. That came as no surprise. The company is phasing out Symbian in favor of Windows Phone under an alliance with Microsoft. "The arrival of new Lumia devices on Windows [Phone] 8 should help halt the decline in share in the fourth quarter of 2012, although it won't be until 2013 to see a significant improvement in Nokia's position," Gartner said.

[ Is Microsoft's future in hardware? Watch For Microsoft To Acquire Nokia, Nvidia. ]

Nokia's Lumia line is key to Microsoft's hopes for Windows Phone 8. Nokia introduced two devices at a recent New York City event -- the flagship Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820. Both were the first publicly demonstrated devices to carry Windows Phone 8, which offers support for advanced features like quad-core processors, which are not found in the new Nokia phones.

Both phones feature a 1.5-GHz Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, cameras with Carl Zeiss optics and wireless chargers. The 920 generally carries higher specs all around. It sports a 4.5-inch display, compared to 4.3 inches for the 820, 32 GB of storage (compared to 8 GB) and PureMotion HD+ display technology (compared to the 820's ClearBlack OLED display).

Microsoft and its partners are using aggressive pricing in their efforts to build share for Windows Phone. AT&T is offering the Lumia 920 for just $99 with a contract. Apple's new flagship, the iPhone 5, by contrast starts at $199 on AT&T. Verizon, meanwhile, plans to offer the Lumia 822 for $99 on contract, and also reportedly plans to introduce a Windows 8 smartphone that is free with a contract.

Overall, Gartner said that worldwide sales of mobile phones to end users totaled roughly 428 million units in the third quarter, down 3.1% from a year ago. But there are some positive signs looking ahead. "After two consecutive quarters of decline in mobile phone sales, demand has improved in both mature and emerging markets," said Gartner analyst Anshul Gupta, in a statement.

While it is still unknown who in China, specifically, is doing the hacking, technical gains are helping trackers trace cyberespionage "campaigns" back to the country. Among the culprits, according to the annual report to Congress of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission:

  • The People's Liberation Army.
  • Informal "cyber warfare militia" composed of workers with high-tech day jobs that focus on military communications, electronic warfare, and computer network operations.
  • Three intelligence and security service ministries.
  • Patriotic hackers conducting espionage out of nationalist fervor.
  • Criminal hackers conducting industrial espionage for private, state-owned, or government clients.
  • Big IT companies and telecommunications firms.

"China?s cyber capabilities provide Beijing with an increasingly potent tool to achieve national objectives," the congressional report states. "In a strategic framework that leans heavily on cyber espionage, a diverse set of Chinese hackers use pilfered information to advance political, economic, and security objectives."

The report cites China?s new J-20 stealth fighter jet as an example. Photos of the J-20 show similarities with the Lockheed Martin F-22. The photos revived ?concerns that human, cyber, or other forms of espionage may have played a role in the J-20?s development,? the report says.

The report also notes other examples of ?malicious Chinese cyber activity? in 2012, including successful attacks on NASA networks and spear phishing e-mails targeting the White House Military Office, which assists in presidential communications and travel.

Chinese hackers have long appeared less sophisticated than those in Russia. But there are signs that is changing. In January, a China-based attack targeted the "secure authentication" system of the Defense Department's Common Access Card standard, one of the Pentagon's most secure systems.

Moreover, Chinese hackers reportedly used thumb drives and compact discs to infiltrate computers belonging to India's Eastern Naval Command, which had no connection to the Internet. Infiltrating weapons systems, including missiles, aircraft, ships, and ground systems is a Chinese focus, US military officials testified this year.

By the way, Washington lost to Albany

To be more specific: Washington lost to Albany at home. And the craziest part is Albany didn't even play all that well.

Go ahead, look at the box score. The Great Danes -- who entered the season ranked No. 213 in Dan Hanner's Lineup-Derived Preseason Projections, for the record -- shot 45.1 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from 3, and 62.5 percent from the line. Only two players, Mike Black and Jacob Iati, scored in double figures (with 20 and 22 points, respectively). Albany grabbed just 20.4 percent of their misses, and got the three free throw line on just 31.4 percent of their possessions.

I repeat: Albany didn't even play that well.

Indeed, Washington was just that bad. The Huskies went 41.5 percent from the field, made just 3 of their 12 3-point field goal attempts, and missed 11 of their 26 free throw attempts. They were better than Albany in the other four factors (turnovers, rebounding, free throw rate), but threw up a 44.3 percent effective field goal percentage, and that was essentially the difference.

How did this happen? Unlike yours truly, who was consumed by the Tip Off Marathon within the social media bunker here in Bristol, Basketball Prospectus writer and UW expert Kevin Pelton was actually watching the game, and he offered some helpful perspective today:

Things turned when Great Danes coach Will Brown went to a zone defense that the Huskies were unable to crack. From the 13:24 mark to the 2:31 mark of the second half, Washington made just one field goal. At the other end, Albany was slowly finding an answer to the Huskies' superior size. The shooting of Iati, who made half of his 12 three-point attempts, was a major factor. Washington couldn't risk leaving the sharpshooter alone for a second, which opened up the floor for his teammates. When the Great Danes started bringing N'Diaye out of the paint, they had their solution. Albany scored seven times on eight possessions. Ordinarily, Romar would have gone zone to keep his rim protector down low, but Iati's shooting made that too much of a risk. So by the time the Huskies made adjustments on offense, they were playing from behind and it was too late to keep the game from going down to the buzzer.

So, what does this mean for Washington's season? As tempting as it is to freak out, I largely agree with Pelton's take: Close games, and wacky results happen all the time this time of year. Typically, they are forgotten, often because they end in narrow you-may-now-exhale wins. Anything can happen in 40 minutes. When that anything becomes a loss like this, it resonates more. But it's safe to say Washington is not nearly as bad as they showed on Tuesday night.

Still, it's clear the Huskies are in a bad way. Lorenzo Romar's success in the past seven seasons has been predicated largely on talent and depth. Romar stocks his talent with quick, athletic players, and then runs all of them at opponents at near-breakneck speed. But with a mere seven-man rotation right now, the Huskies are handicapped. Even if they don't take another loss this bad all season (a fair bet), it could still be a very long season in Montlake.

Three financial tech start-ups to watch - ReadySpace Australia

?

The financial industry may be in doldrums, but that has not stopped technology start-ups from coming up with innovative services targeted at banks and consumers.

?

At the inaugural FinovateAsia held at the Singapore Expo last Tuesday, 35 companies were given seven minutes each to showcase their wares that run the gamut from personal financial management to trading simulation. Here are three young firms with products that stood out from the pack:

?

TradeHero This is a Singapore-developed stock market simulation app that lets you hone your trading skills by following the trading actions of a community of virtual traders.

?

According to Gary Gan, business development director of MyManisku, the company behind TradeHero, the app draws real-time data from 14 stock exchanges, 45,000 global securities, and 1,300 currency pairs.

?

Users are credited with a $100,000 starting portfolio and can make trades to create their own virtual portfolio. The app?s Leaderboard identifies the most successful traders known as ?Heroes? by their returns, and they are ranked by Exchange, Sector, Monthly or Quarterly returns, as well as overall returns.

?

For a small monthly fee, users can choose to ?follow? and receive trade feeds from their chosen Heroes via push notifications on their mobile devices. These push notifications detail each Buy and Sell action of the Hero, allowing Followers to receive expert trading tips and personal insight into successful investment strategies. Subscription revenues are shared equally with Heroes, allowing expert traders to monetize their expertise.

?

?We envision an always-on global TradeHero community with key market insights being formulated and delivered, monetized and executed globally on our mobile platform ? we see the entire world transformed into a virtual trading floor,? Gan says.

?

MyManisku, which was founded in 2010, secured a grant from the Media Development Authority and the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation in September 2011, followed by first-round seed funding from the National Research Foundation and TNF Ventures in August 2012.

?

TradeHero will be available from the Apple App Store in mid-November.

PerfectSen Malaysia-based Perfectsen was founded late 2010 by a group of IT professionals with extensive background in software development for financial institutions. The company?s personal financial management (PFM) software lets banks incorporate financial management features in their online banking sites to build customer loyalty.

?

At FinovateAsia, the company unveiled The Hook, which lets banks place personalised ads to cross-sell and up-sell financial products that a customer may be interested in by mining his or her spending patterns, demographic profile and other attributes.

?

The ads can be easily installed with a single line of code on, say, a customer?s personal online banking portal. Think of it as a combination of Google AdSense, Adwords and Analytics for financial institutions.

?

Retaining a customer is said to be five times cheaper than acquiring a new one, so The Hook should go a long way to help banks reduce churn. The company is funded by the Malaysia?s Cradle Fund and counts MayBank as customers.

?

According to Perfectsen, The Hook is hosted within the bank?s IT environment and compatible with most enterprise grade database and OS systems. Deployment takes between eight to 16 weeks, depending on the bank?s internal approvals, data availability and IT integration.

?

CurrencyFair If you?ve ever exchanged currency and transferred funds to an overseas bank account, you would be aware of the hefty fees that banks charge for each transaction. CurrencyFair aims to reduce that middleman cost by letting you negotiate your own exchange rates with other users on the same service.

?

While CurrencyFair slashes the bank?s margin for forex transfers ? you still pay the bank for incoming and/or outgoing transfers ?? you can save up to 90 per cent of the total cost of international fund transfers.

?

The service is easy to use. You start by depositing the funds you want to exchange into CurrencyFair?s bank account, so everyone on the platform is backed up with real cash. When you are ready to trade, enter the amount of currency you want to buy and/or sell through via two trading mechanisms: QuickTrade and MarketPlace.

?

In a QuickTrade, the platform offers you the best available rates put up by other users for the currency you want. Once the transaction goes through, you can send the currency to a bank account worldwide. If you want a better rate, put up your preferred rates on MarketPlace and wait for someone to match those rates.

?

The company has raised two million euros in equity funding and boasts of 10,000 registered users who have exchanged an average of over one million euros per day. Based in Dublin, CurrencyFair is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland under the Europe-wide Payment Services Regulations 2009.

GOP senators vow to block Rice nomination at State

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee says he would do all he could to block the nomination of Susan Rice to be secretary of State.

Sen. John McCain of Arizona on Wednesday criticized the current U.N. ambassador over comments she made after the deadly Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi. Five days after the attack, Rice said the attack was the result of an angry response to an anti-Muslim video.

Administration officials have indicated that President Barack Obama is considering Rice as a replacement for Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference that he doesn't trust Rice.

United says Sandy cut Oct. revenue by $90 million

(AP) ? United Airlines says Superstorm Sandy cut its October revenue by about $90 million as it was forced to cancel almost 5,300 flights.

That's nearly an entire day's worth of United's schedule lost. It runs about 5,500 flights a day throughout the world.

United, the world's largest airline, said late Wednesday that the storm that came aground in the New York area 10 days ago shaved about $35 million off its profit in October.

But the hurricane-winter storm hybrid boosted its per-passenger revenue by about 1 percent. That's because some stranded travelers were stuffed onto other flights, allowing the airline to improve efficiency.

Delta said last week that Sandy cut its October revenue by $45 million and profit by $20 million.

CHOP experts describe research in pediatric heart disease ...

? Children's Health ? ? Heart ? Nov 08, 2012

Physician-researchers from the Cardiac Center at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia presented new findings on pediatric cardiovascular disease at the American Heart Association?s Scientific Sessions 2012 in Los Angeles. They described racial disparities in risk factors for sudden cardiac death, imaging modalities and novel approaches to assessing cardiac anomalies, ventricular assist device use, special considerations in syndromes in adult congenital heart disease, changes in immunosuppressive drugs after pediatric heart transplant, and many other topics.

Children?s Hospital clinicians also moderated scientific sessions, participated on expert panels and shared knowledge on career paths. Below are summaries of some of the research presented at abstract sessions.

-Minority and Suburban Children are at Higher Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death-

Among children who suffered sudden cardiac death (SCD), significant risk factors included being black, Hispanic, older than 6 months, and living in the suburbs. Victoria L. Vetter, M.D., and colleagues reviewed a dataset from 16 states from 2005 to 2009 in records maintained by the National Center for the Review and Prevention of Child Deaths. Among 1,099 cases of child cardiovascular deaths, the team identified 63 percent as SCD and 37 percent as non-sudden cardiovascular death. Prior conditions, identified in 49 percent of the children who died, included congenital heart defects, cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia, with most deaths occurring at home or school (30 percent) or in the hospital (40 percent). In comparing SCD to non-sudden death, the researchers found significant differences in race, with SCD at 73 percent of cardiovascular deaths in blacks vs. 61 percent in whites. SCD occurred more frequently in suburban sites than in urban sites. The data may help researchers to better understand and prevent SCD. Victoria L. Vetter et al, Preliminary Analysis of the National Child Death Review Database for Cardiovascular Deaths

- Cardiac MRI Detects Serious Blood Flow Reversal after Heart Surgery in Children-

Cardiac researchers demonstrate that a combination of imaging techniques can identify a serious reversal of blood flow that occurs in some children after reconstructive surgery for complex heart defects. Using time resolved gadolinium angiography (TWIST) and magnetic resonance phase contrast velocity mapping (PC-MRI), Kevin K. Whitehead, M.D., Ph.D. and colleagues describe their experience in identifying blood flow reversal in children who have undergone superior cavopulmonary connections (SCPC) as part of the Fontan procedure for single ventricle heart defects. Identifying flow reversal in the left pulmonary artery (LPA) and right upper lobe branch (RUL) pulmonary artery is important, because these manifestations of systemic to pulmonary arterial collateral flow (CollF) may result in poor outcomes for these patients. A failure to recognize LPA or RUL flow reversal may also cause clinicians to significantly underestimate CollF. The researchers reviewed 112 SCPC patients who had CollF quantified by MRI, and were able to readily identify LPA or RUL flow reversal in 7 percent of these patients.

The CollF burden was much higher for patients with flow reversal than in those without flow reversal.

Kevin K. Whitehead et al, Branch Pulmonary Artery Flow Reversal Can Be Identified by Cardiac Magnetic Resonance and Is Associated with Increased Collateral Flow Burden in Patients with Superior Cavopulmonary Connections.

- Arterial Embolization in Single-Ventricle Patients Improves Systemic Blood Flow in Short Term-

For the first time, cardiology researchers report the acute efficacy of performing embolization of systemic to pulmonary arterial collateral (SPC) vessels in children with single-ventricle disease. Yoav Dori, M.D., and colleagues at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia used magnetic resonance phase contrast velocity mapping (PC-MRI) to measure blood flow in six patients with superior cavopulmonary connections. The study team performed the measurements both immediately before and after cardiac catheterization with coil and particle embolization of angiographically evident SPC vessels. The researchers measured superior and inferior caval, total pulmonary artery, total pulmonary vein, ascending and descending aortic flows. After embolization, the team found a significant decrease in SPC burden and pulmonary flow and significant increase in systemic blood flow. The findings advance the understanding of treatment of these blood flow abnormalities in single-ventricle patients, although further studies should assess the durability of SPC embolization as well as the effect on Fontan outcomes.

Yoav Dori et al, Acute Efficacy of Systemic to Pulmonary Arterial Embolization

- A Novel 3D Cardiac MRI Improves the View of Children?s Aortic Arch Anomalies-

A cardiac research team reports that, compared to standard cardiac MRI techniques, a 3D imaging tool provides superior imaging of aortic arch (Ao) anomalies in children. Kevin K. Whitehead, M.D., Ph.D. and colleagues at Children?s Hospital enrolled 26 pediatric patients with suspected Ao anomalies in a study of a 3D, T1-weighted turbo spin echo dark blood with navigator-triggered prospective acquisition correction (3D-SPACE DB) technique. The study team compared the new images to those acquired by the standard clinical protocol, evaluating them for image quality and Ao measurements. The 3D-SPACE DB provided superior imaging in a variety of arch anomalies, including vascular rings, native and repaired coarctation of the aorta (CoA), and aortic dilation. In two CoA cases, the 3D technique showed arch patency when other modalities did not. It also allowed assessment of the airway in vascular rings. Furthermore, 3D SPACE DB can potentially decrease scan times by reducing the number and type of acquisitions acquired.

Kevin K. Whitehead et al, Navigated 3D Dark Blood Provides Superior Imaging in Arch Anomalies in Children

- Review: Pediatric Survival Increases with Greater Use of Ventricular Assist Devices-

Over the past decade, as the use of ventricular assist devices (VADs) has increased in children with heart disease, survival rates have increased as well. Joseph W. Rossano, M.D., and colleagues at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia performed a retrospective study of patients aged 20 years and younger in the Pediatric Health Information System Database who received VADs from 2000 to 2010. During that decade, clinicians placed 475 VADs in children during Era 1 (2000-2003) and Era 2 (2007-2010). The median age at implantation was 6.0 years, with the proportion of children aged 1 to 12 years increasing from 29 percent in Era 1 to 47 percent in Era 2. The majority of patients had a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy, which increased from 52 percent in Era 1 to 72 percent in Era 2. Co-morbidities included arrhythmias, pulmonary hypertension, acute renal failure and cerebrovascular disease. Of the 475 patients, 247 (52 percent) underwent heart transplantation. Overall 327 children (69 percent) survived, with mortality decreasing from 42 percent in Era 1 to 25 percent in Era 2. The factors independently associated with increased mortality include infancy, acute renal failure, cerebrovascular disease, and the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The decline in mortality was accompanied by an increase in median hospital length of stay (37 days in Era 1 compared to 69 days in Era 2) and increasing hospital charges.

Joseph W. Rossano et al, Decreasing Mortality of Ventricular Assist devices at Children?s Hospitals from 2000 to 2010: Improvement at a Cost

- Co-morbid Heart Failure Is Linked to Increased Mortality in Single-Ventricle Patients-

More than one in 10 children with single-ventricle heart disease may also be hospitalized with co-morbid heart failure. A retrospective review by Joseph W. Rossano, M.D., and colleagues at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia found that this little-studied patient population has a higher mortality rate and longer length of stay (LOS) than single-ventricle children not hospitalized for heart failure. The researchers analyzed data from 2000, 2003 and 2006 in the Health Care Cost and Utilization Project Kids Inpatient Database, a nationwide sampling of pediatric hospitalizations. The analysis included 732 heart failure-related hospitalizations (HFRH) among single-ventricle patients in 2000 and 1,168 HFRH in 2006. HFRH patients had LOS nearly twice as long as non-HFRH patients, and their mortality was 50 percent higher. The HFRH group also had higher rates of morbidities, such as arrhythmias, sepsis and respiratory failure. Non-cardiac morbidities such as cerebrovascular disease, acute renal failure, sepsis and the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) were independently associated with hospital mortality.

Joseph W. Rossano et al, The Burden of Heart Failure Related Hospitalizations in Children with Single Ventricle Disease in the United States

- Immunosuppression for Children with Heart Transplants May Avoid Calcineurin Inhibitors-

While calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) have been the cornerstone of immunosuppression in heart transplant patients, CNIs are toxic to the kidneys and are not effective for cardiac allograft vasculopathy. Joseph Rossano, M.D., director of the heart transplant program at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia, led a single-center retrospective review to evaluate the efficacy and side effect profile of sirolimus used with or without an antimetabolite in the absence of calcineurin inhibitors. The researchers analyzed records of 17 children (median age, 1.2 years) who underwent heart transplantation between 2002 and 2010. All the patients were changed from CNIs to sirolimus at an average time of almost 6 years post-transplant. The reasons for the change were renal dysfunction in 11 patients, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder in 5 patients, and cardiac allograft vasculopathy, or CAV, in 1 patient. All 17 patients are living almost 3 years after the change was made. There was one episode of rejection within the year of the change and 4 episodes in the year after the change. In this small cohort, there was no decrease in renal function or progression of CAV. These patients require monitoring for acute rejection. Further study in larger cohorts should assess longer-term outcomes.

Joseph W. Rossano et al, Calcineurin-Inhibitor Free Sirolimus-based Immunosuppression in Pediatric Heart Transplant Patients

- Patients Who Need a Heart Re-Transplant May Benefit from a Concurrent Kidney Transplant-

Heart transplant patients who require a re-transplant often have new co-morbidities such as kidney disease, and may benefit from a concurrent kidney transplant. Kimberly Lin, M.D., and colleagues at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia performed a retrospective research study of the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) database to analyze heart re-transplants from 1987 to 2011. Of the 1,660 heart re-transplant patients in the database, 116 had a concurrent kidney transplant. The median age of patients undergoing heart re-transplant was 43 years. Contrary to the researchers? hypothesis, the median survival of patients receiving concurrent kidney transplants was longer (10.5 years) than in patients receiving heart re-transplant alone (6.7 years). The survival benefit of the concurrent kidney transplant group occurred despite older age, a higher burden of diabetes and a longer waiting time for transplantation. Even the subgroup of patients with the poorest kidney function had a survival benefit from a concurrent transplant. The research team concluded that in candidates for heart re-transplantation, kidney failure should not preclude consideration for re-transplantation in those eligible for concurrent kidney transplantation.

Kimberly Y. Lin et al, Heart Re-Transplant Recipients Fare Better with Concurrent Kidney Transplantation than with Heart Re-Transplant Alone
